Why do good speakers cost so much?

Good speakers have high costs for components, design, materials, and labor.

First, there must be a sound engineer. The sound engineer designs a system based on the desired effect. For example, how sensitive the system should be, the low-frequency cutoff point, the power, and the directivity control. The industrial standard should meet what standard. Then, the system architecture must be designed, whether it is passive or active, how the crossover is divided. How the units are connected and integrated. A comprehensive solution is made, and the parameters and performance required for the units are proposed. Then comes the simulation engineer, who designs the units and performs simulations. The units are produced, and then tested and optimized, with the normal procedure of repeating this step multiple times before the final unit is finalized. The high-frequency horn section also requires the design of a very professional horn designer. It is also sampled, tested, and optimized. Then the cabinet simulation, testing and optimization. Finally, the cabinet and crossover parameters are determined.

Then comes the appearance and function, professional loudspeakers also need to consider transportation, installation, hanging center of gravity and balance, etc. practical use problems. Then it is designed, optimized and sampled dozens of times again. Finally, it is finalized.

Finally, there are packaging components, 3C certification, and various industrial standard reviews. Material BOM (Bill of Materials) and production specifications manuals.

At this point, a qualified product is finally ready for mass production, and to achieve all this, not only do we need a lot of highly skilled professionals.

You also need excellent suppliers, such as those who can produce certain finishes or certain manufacturing processes that you design. They may not be able to produce them or have difficulty controlling deviations, so you need to communicate and make changes. In many cases, if you don't want to make products with standard molds, many materials will basically have to be custom-made. And the cost of opening a mold is very high.

Then you need a large soundproof chamber, professional testing instruments and software. The entire setup can start at several million yuan.

If you make an active speaker, you also need to involve DSP audio algorithm engineers, digital and analog circuit engineers. Generally, people who create circuit diagrams usually don't draw them. People who can draw them usually don't understand circuit principles. People who can do algorithms usually don't know hardware. So, you also need three teams of people to design the circuits. Then there are the procurement, quality control, and production personnel involved in the entire production process.
